CAMPUS MASTER PLANNING & CHANGE MANAGEMENT

Higher education is in the midst of a building boom and a sort of “facilities arms race” to build new campus amenities, raising the stakes in the competition for students. Campus master planning is being boosted by this boom and is experiencing resurgence. The surge in campus master planning is part of a larger picture: the reshaping of planning and leadership in colleges and universities in order to enhance productivity,
control costs, and position the institutions for success.

Over time, campus master planning will shift from land use to realigning and retrofitting existing facilities to become flexible, fused-use spaces supporting learning and other functionality, 24/7. In this environment, campus master planning will need to incorporate a strong element of change management. Campus planning and planning for individual facilities will need to incorporate change management activities that facilitate the transition of the campus and of the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other stakeholders participating in the use of new and redesigned/retrofitted facilities. ______________________________________________________
