TECHNOLOGY ENABLES FUSION OF
FUNCTIONALITY IN NEW WAYS
Even before wireless mobility, technology was creating new opportunities to design multi-use space that supported a variety of
new behaviors. These new spaces, public and private, have enabled the fusion of work, learning, recreation, contemplation, and
family activities in new ways. These developments have been accentuated and accelerated by the introduction of mobile technologies.

• William J. Mitchell, City of Bits: Space, Place, and the Infobahn.
MIT Press, 1995.
This book is a classic and a must read. It describes how technologies are enabling the creation of a new breed of
fused use space combining different functions that were once served by single use, stand-alone facilities like libraries, student
unions, classroom/faculty office buildings, and recreational facilities. These principles are an essential element of the new urbanism.

of fused-use spaces that have implications for campus facilities planning:
1) Centers of Academic Technology,
2) Fusion of Academic and Non-Academic Functions,
3) Work and Learning Centers in Urban Activity Settings,
4) Discovery and Learning in Experience-Rich Settings, and
5) Virtual Work and Learning Environments.

This satellite broadcast by the Society for College and University Planning captured the trends discussed in the “Space: The Final Frontier”
article and provides case studies and examples that illustrated the different types of fused-use spaces in 1999.
